With the cost of living on the rise, and the economy a growing concern, you might imagine that the numbers of people planning to go on vacation would be down.
Incredibly, this is not to the case.
According to a recent survey conducted, 82% of Americans are still planning to get away from it all this summer.
Rising fuel costs are an important consideration of vacationers, so it might be surprising at first glance that most people still intend to travel by car while on vacation.
However, airline tickets are also rising; along with the added fees for luggage, food & drink and the fact that some airlines are actually discontinuing in flight entertainment.
In fact the cost of driving for a family of four is cheaper than flying.
Although RV's offer a home on wheels, only 9% of those surveyed indicated that they would travel by RV.
By traveling in an RV you have all the comforts of home: your own bed, a bathroom only used by you and your family, your own kitchen & cooking supplies and you can even bring along your bicycles or tow a small vehicle for jaunts away from the RV Park.
Other alternate forms of travel included train, motorcycle and bicycle, all of which cost far less, but have limited usefulness for family vacations.
About a third of survey respondents plan to take only short vacations, often weekends of 2-3 days not too far away from home.
Another third have set aside about a week for their trips.
Most of those who are spending time away plan to stay at a hotel or motel, usually near a beach or waterfront.
A large number of respondents have decided to save money by vacationing at home with their families.
Many choose to take road trips to local attractions, or to visit nearby beaches or scenic locations.
Expensive vacation plans, such as theme parks and fancy resorts are down, with only 20% of those surveyed planning on a vacation at such expensive locations.
In fact, spending is down, with most people planning to spend under $1000 for their vacation needs this summer.
Even though spending is down, having quality family time is still highly important to Americans, and most look forward to enjoying their vacations with those they love.
