Make Your Own Personalized Clock

Make Your Own Personalized Clock

This craft tutorial will teach you how to decorate a clock face using strips of paper. You can choose colors that match whatever room you want to put the clock in.
  • Age Guideline: 10 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 30 minutes + (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Let's begin...

Gathering The Supplies to Make Your Clock

Before you start any project it is easiest to gather together all of the supplies. For this project you will need:
Now we can start crafting...

Cutting Strips of Paper to Make a Decoupaged Clock

Cut several paper strips from contrasting paper. The strips should all be different widths and you also want them to be wider on one end that the other. Lay them out on the clock face so you can figure out how many you need. One thing you need to make sure of is that the ends should be long enough to hang over the edges and fold over to the back of the clock.

Glue the Paper to the Clock Face

Use a foam brush to cover the clock face with a layer of decoupage medium. Stick on each paper strip, smoothing them down as you go. When you situate each piece of paper, make sure there is plenty of extra paper hanging over all of the edges to wrap around the sides of the clock. Let the decoupage medium dry.

Glue the Paper to the Clock Back

When the clock face is dry, you need to flip the clock over and lay it on your work surface. Fold the ends and edges of the paper strips around the back of the clock. Use glue to hold these in place. If they need some help sticking, use a little bit of tape to hold them down until the glue dries.

Seal the Clock Face

Flip your clock back over and use 2 or 3 thin layers of decoupage medium to seal the face of the clock. Make sure you let each layer dry completely before you add the next one otherwise you might get some bubbling.

Figure Out the Clock Face

Before you do too much figuring on your own, check the clock kit directions to see if they offer any helpful hints.

To figure out the number placement on my clock, I used a paper plate. Use a ruler to draw 6 lines, evenly spaced around the plate.

Gluing on the Clock Numbers

Place the paper plate with the lines you drew on top of your clock face. Make sure the line that is marking the 12:00 and 6:00 times are straight up and down. Use the paper plate as a guide along with a pen and mark the spots where you will place each button or whatever you will use to represent each number.
Use a generous amount of glue to glue on each button. Make sure you let the glue dry completely before you move the clock.

This step is optional. You can carefully paint the clock hands. Paint them a color that will contrast with the colors on the clock so they can be easily seen. Let the paint dry and then spray the hands with a couple light coats of clear acrylic spray.

Once all of the glue and clear acrylic spray is completely dry, you can assemble the clack hands by following the directions provided in the kit. Hang up your clock and show it off to everyone you know.
