- 1). Select your ingredients. Tea tree oil is popular for it's antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, and lavender oil can help balance pH. It's also considered a soothing aroma. Witch hazel, a popular hemorrhoid remedy, also works well to sooth diaper rash redness and irritation. Calendula oil is considered good for dry and irritated skin. You can mix and match essential oils, depending on your needs.
- 2). Select a spray bottle large enough to hold your solution, which will come to either one or two cups, depending on how strong you want your spray. You can find spray bottles at most retail stores in the cleaning or personal hygiene sections. Thoroughly wash your spray bottle before use.
- 3). Pour one cup of water into your spray bottle, followed by one to three drops of the essential oils of your choice. You can add as many, or as few ingredients, as necessary for your baby's individual needs. It may take some experimentation with sprays, before finding the right balance of ingredients. Close the bottle tightly.
- 4). Shake the bottle to disperse your ingredients. You may need to shake the bottle before each use, to ensure that the oils are evenly distributed, before spraying the solution on your baby's diaper area. If the spray seems too strong in scent, you can dilute it further with water.
- 5). Store your spray out of reach of children. Check the solution weekly for nasty buildup or residue. If found, toss the batch, wash the bottle, and make a new one. You can store it in the refrigerator, which can extend the shelf life of your solution, though some children may find the chill more disturbing than soothing.
