Having the ability to perform basic duties for the family is much simpler than most people imagine. Becoming a basic handyman does not mean you have to be a technical expert. It means you merely know some basics about typical home and auto-care issues and how to make common fixes. - One of the most common issues around the home---usually within sinks, tubs, and showers---is clogging. Clogging is usually the result of an accumulation of hair or another solid material. Although the first step is to often reach for chemicals---which can have damaging environmental effects---there are several simple, more natural methods which will clear up most clogs.
Remove the drain and clear any solid materials or excess hair with your hands. Although this is a dirty job, it will often fix the problem then and there. Assuming the drain is a kitchen drain, which is likely clogged by food, then you should use a plunger a few times to see if you can unclog the drain. For shower and tub clogs, a homemade "drain snake" can be created out of a hanger. Simply untwist the coat-hanger into an elongated wire, followed by twisting the end into a very short hook with a pair of pliers. Dip the hanger into the drain until all excess hair is removed. - WD-40 serves many purposes around the house and should be in every handyman's tool belt. It consists of a chemical that serves as a protector, cleaner, and lubricant. WD-40 eliminates squeakiness in home and car doors, and also ensures that mechanical hinges, parts, and pieces last longer and move more freely. Be careful not to get WD-40 on fabric, as it stains.
- Auto care can be one of the most intimidating handyman jobs, as there are many parts and pieces that accompany any given vehicle. Although there are many areas of auto care that are complicated for non-mechanics, there are several issues any driver can resolve. One of the most important issues to monitor and repair is tire inflation. Not only do under- and over-inflated tires risk blowouts, but they shorten the life of the tire by causing excess wear and even decrease gas mileage. Simple tire inflation can be checked with a gauge, measuring the pounds per square inch within the tire. Owners should refer to their vehicle manual to ensure that all tires are at the appropriate pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
