Back then, a glamorous Lorraine was advertising the drink Campari when a male admirer asked her: €Where you truly wafted here from Paradise?€ she replied in a broad cockney accent: €Nah, Luton Airport!€
The advert was such a hit it inspired two pop songs and numerous spoofs all based on Luton being a small and obscure airport. It launched Lorraine Chase's career and she soon became a celebrity working in the theatre and doing the rounds of the television games shows. In fact, she's never looked back and has never really shaken off that cockney image.
Today London Luton Airport is a thriving hub flying 10 million passengers to no fewer than 90 destinations world-wide.
The airport's biggest carrier, EasyJet, is the UK's largest airline. Proving they can enjoy a joke, EasyJet even commissioned Lorraine Chase to launch their Love Luton campaign. The initiative, which included emblazoning Love Luton on an aircraft, was part of the town's bid to win city status. Lorraine, who also checked in the airline's first passenger at Luton in 1995, christened the rebranded plane.

The Carnival will also be part of the weekend-long Love Luton event which will include concerts by a variety of artists. There will also be dance, schools shows and cultural events across the town. The headline acts will be Olly Murs and The Wanted. If that's not to your taste there will be plenty of other entertainment between July 6 and 9.
