In Colorado alone there are 8,000-12,000 black bears that will be waking up from their hibernation and GUESS WHAT they are all looking for food-YOUR FOOD.
This annual event is greeted this year with more attention than usual because of the heavy snow pack in the mountains which will effectively prevent the bears from most of their normal food sources.
Wild life officials point out that when bears are hungry they are more aggressive than normal-SO BEWARE.
As the bears come out of the mountains looking for food they will pick the easiest sources first.
Dumpsters, trash cans, pet food in the backyard; even bird feeders are prime pickins for bears.
Black bears are notoriously curious and less aggressive than browns or grizzlies.
They are however extremely motivated by food.
It is their very keen sense of smell that draws them to food out in the wilderness or in your backyard.
So think about these things that may draw bears to your backyard.
The one that is most overlooked is the family bbq grill which is usually not cleaned very well and reeking of old food smells.
They are normally afraid of confrontation unless threatened or protecting their cubs.
The sound of barking dogs is enough to scare them away.
It is this same keen sense of smell that makes bear pepper spray so effective.
Never purposely confront a bear.
Be extremely cautious around bears.
They are very quick despite their lumbering appearance.
