Breast Augmentation- Shaping the World

Nowadays, women are becoming more conscious about their physical appearance, particularly their breasts. To change the shape of their breasts, they opt for surgical methods and the most commonly used one is breast augmentation with submuscular placement. This plastic surgery has been gaining increased popularity for the past ten years.

A Quick Glance at Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is commonly known as breast implant. It is used to enlarge a woman's breast for cosmetic reasons or for reconstruction purposes. The submuscular type involves placing of an implant behind the pectoral muscles of the breast. This breast implant is placed just underneath the chest wall.

There are two types of submuscular placement breast augmentation, the partial and the complete. In partial submuscular placement, the implant is not totally covered by muscle. Only about two-thirds of the implant is covered. On the other hand, the complete submuscular breast augmentation covers the two-thirds of the implant as well as the remaining third with the use of other chest wall muscles. This type of submuscular placement can be achieved via inframammary breast implant incision, areola breast implant incision, or transaxillary breast implant incision.

Pros of Breast Augmentation- Submuscular Placement

The implant is covered by the breast tissues and the muscles. This keeps the implant in place and helps hide the edges, giving the breasts a more natural look and feel after the surgery. If compared with other breast surgeries, the submuscular placement produces favorable outcome in women with smaller breasts.

The method of placing an implant underneath the pectoral muscles is not a hindrance for the detection of breast cancer. Breast implants may obscure breast tissues during a breast examination such as the mammogram. However, evidences found that this type of implant placement has reduced risk of interfering with mammography exams. Also, women using submuscular breast augmentation get lower risks of scarring in the skin and tissues near the implant. The risks of capsular contracture, which can create an abnormal painful firmness of the breast, are also lowered.

One common complication of breast enhancements is the possibility of bottoming out, which causes the nipples to be abnormally positioned high on the breast. However, this type of complication is very rarely seen in a submuscular placement breast augmentation.

Cons of Breast Augmentation- Submuscular Placement

All implants have some sort of disadvantages and submuscular placement breast augmentation is no exception. One of the downside is that it requires longer surgery because in order to place the implant, the pectoral muscles must be manipulated. And for the same reason, post operative discomforts are higher and recovery time may take longer. Additionally, the procedure is difficult to perform since it involves the chest muscles.

If the produce makes use of a textured breast implant, creation of cleavage may be hindered. It also has a temporary drawback which is the fact that the operated breast will sit slightly higher on the chest than usual but should go back to normal once the pectoral muscles relax.

Up until present, breast augmentation using submuscular placement is one of the most successful procedures that promises beautifully well-shaped breasts.
