- 1). Divide the class into five groups. Assign each group one of the five main biomes of the world.
- 2). Give the students access to the library and computer for research on their biomes. Some helpful websites are worldbiomes.com and blueplanetbiomes.org. Have them write five to ten facts about each aspect of the biomes (animal life, plant life, climate, what it looks like and fun facts). The research portion may take one to two days, depending on your school's resources.
- 3). Supply the students with a large box, paint, modeling clay and other craft and art supplies. Give them at least two days to use the facts they found to build a diorama of the biome. Explain that the diorama is just a small-scale example of the biome. It should give the rest of the class an idea of what that biome looks like and what lives in it.
- 4). Provide each team with a sheet of poster board and markers. Have them organize their facts in the five fact groups and write them neatly on the poster board for the peer presentation.
- 5). Give each group an allotted time to present their biome to the class. The groups can elect a spokesperson to describe the diorama and a person to read the poster board. One biome should be presented each day over the course of a week.
- 6). Display the biomes and posters in the classroom so that the students may reference them for any assessments on the unit. When the unit is finished, display the biomes and posters in the hallway or library for the school to admire.
