The Manager"s Legal Handbook by Attorneys Amy Delpo and Lisa Guerin

"The Manager's Legal Handbook" by Attorneys Amy Delpo and Lisa Guerin is another informative text published by Nolo, the publisher that is passionate about making law accessible to everyone.
This book is a resource for those who supervise employees and independent contractors.
It contains a plethora of advice on important topics to managers.
The five hundred page book is divided into fourteen chapters after a short introduction regarding how to use the book, and a few additional resources.
The chapters focus on various situations managers face.
These include: Hiring, Compensation and Hours, Discrimination, Personal Basics, Time Off, Privacy, Health and Safety, Unions, Independent Contractors, Trade Secrets, Handling Workplace Problems, Firing Employees, Layoffs, and Departing Workers.
The book's format is easy to read.
There is text, frequently answered question boxes, side bars with real life examples, checklists, some legal dos and don'ts and a small quiz at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge of the chapter's subject.
There are also charts showing where to find state laws for individual states.
Laws and regulations that govern employment can be frustrating to say the least, and with the high rate of lawsuits, no manager wants to find him or herself doing something they shouldn't.
This book is a handy reference to provide the basics to ensure the management of workers is done the right, or at least the legal, way.
The book provides the basics, and the manager will have to take what is here and look to their own company policies and guidelines.
(Hopefully these policies and guidelines were drafted or reviewed by an attorney) There will be some situations where consulting an attorney, be it an in-house attorney for large businesses, or an attorney who is familiar with employment law for small businesses, to ensure actions taken are done so properly.
One thing this book does is provide a guideline for issues, so the aware manager can seek out expert advice when needed.
It is also important to realize that while this book contains the FMLA, ADA, and Cobra updates, these can always change.
Any law can change.
So for certain situations, it is always prudent to ensure the law you believe is governing is still good law and accurate.
Again, this book points out the basics and the issues, but you may have to double check in some situations.
That's the case with any legal book.
I think "The Manager's Legal Handbook" is a valuable reference for many managers and human resource professionals who need quick simple answers to many common employment law questions.
