- All applicants must have at least a high school diploma or GED. Sales agent license applicants have to pass a 55-hour pre-licensing course from an approved educational provider. The associate broker and designated broker licenses require the passing of a 60-hour and 40-hour course, respectively. The passing score for all courses is 75 percent. You can find a list of approved educational providers on the Maine Real Estate Commission website.
- You do not need any prior experience for the sales agent license. For the associate broker license you must have at least two years of experience as a license sales agent. To apply for the designated broker license, you must have at least two years of experience as a licensed associate broker within the five years immediately before you apply for a the license.
- The Maine Real Estate Commission has contracted with a private company, Pearson VUE, for the administration of the real estate licensing examinations. Applicants for a designated broker license do not have to take a test. Sales agents and associate broker applicants have to pass two examinations, a sales agent examination and a law examination. You can register for the examinations from the Pearson VUE website or through calling Pearson VUE at (877) 543-5220. As of January 2011, the examination fee for each examination is $85. You must attain a score of at least 75 percent on each examination to pass.
- After passing the real estate examination, you may submit a licensing application to the Real Estate Commission. You can download an application from the commission's website. When submitting the application, include copies of the transcripts from the completed coursework and a score report from Pearson VUE. As of January 2011, the application fee is $121. The commission will issue your license after approving the application.
- You can apply for a reciprocal license if you already have a real estate license in another state. You will not have to complete the educational course or pass the sales agent examination, but you will have to pass the examination on Maine real estate laws. Include a letter of good standing from the state that currently licenses you when you submit your licensing application.
