- News stories, scandals and mysteries often get a lot of attention, and since they're so timely, they're usually on people's minds. To make a breaking news story an even more interesting topic, choose a local news story. However, be mindful of the audience: if there is someone who will be listening who has a close, emotional tie to the story, you may do more harm than good. Choose local news stories that are somewhat controversial or that can spark a debate instead of stories that are straightforward and only informative.
- A great speech topic that will be both interesting and relevant is a topic that affects your school. If there is a big change in the curriculum or tuition, chances are some students are frustrated. You can also discuss school requirements or hot-button topics that you know students are talking about, such as campus curfews or dorm-room drinking. You can approach a topic like this two ways: either just provide the information so that your audience becomes well-informed, or choose a debatable topic and pick a side.
- If there is a bill that's currently being discussed and decided upon by the federal government, there is a wealth of information out there that you can research. Also, at least some of your classmates will be somewhat familiar with this topic. You can even act as if you're on the Senate and pitch the bill to the audience.
- Some speech topics have been overdone. For example, drinking and driving, while relevant and important, is something that most people have heard about time and time again. This speech topic will not hold the interest of your audience. When choosing a topic, try to think if you've heard about it several times throughout your life. If so, move on to a more unique topic.
