For gardeners on the lookout for a showy new plant, "Joey" has become the most mentioned flower for next Summer.
Though you've probably never heard the botanical name, Ptilotus exaltatus (which means tall feathers), this Australian export is in the amaranthus family.
Joey is striking both for its blooms and its foliage and perfect as an accent plant in groups of three surrounded by lavender pentas or other standards with lavender or white blooms and dark green or silver foliage.
The four inch long flowers are almost bottle-brush or feathery in shape with an iridescent sheen in hot pink and silver and have received top honors in trials from Florida to Colorado.
At 16" tall and 12" wide, Joey is exceptional both as an annual landscape planting and for container gardens.
The oblong, pointed leaves have silver and blue tints and are almost as showy as the graceful tall flowers.
Talk about a plant that has it all! This new variety is also practical.
Tolerant of summer heat and drought, Joey thrives in full sun and fertile, well drained soil but doesn't care much for over-watering or sitting with wet feet.
In the deep south, Joey could tolerate partial shade but this plant is especially eye catching in open garden areas where the sun can catch the complex coloration.
No wonder Joey is so well received.
It seems to have every trait a gardener looks for in appearance and care requirement for a landscape or container plant - and the cut flowers have gotten rave reviews in mixed arrangements.
