Types of Child Car Seats For Infants and Toddlers

There are many child car seat models and brands that it's no wonder that parents get overwhelmed when it's time to buy an infant car seat, convertible or booster car seat for their children.
They often have questions about the car seat laws in their state and inquiries regarding rear-facing, forward-facing, and weight requirements for infants and toddlers.
Knowing the basics will help parents be informed shoppers.
There are three main types of car seats.
These include infant car seats which are rear-facing.
Then there are convertible products which can be positioned in the rear-facing position or forward-facing, hence the name.
Then, there are the booster seats for cars.
These use the car's shoulder and lap belt system to secure the child versus the internal harness of a child seat.
The deciding factor between the different types of child seats for cars is usually weight and height of your child.
Many experts agree that infants should be in rear-facing auto seats for the first year.
Then, as their weight and size increases, they can be placed in front facing seats.
Depending on the brand and model, after around the 40 lbs weight range and height range (dependent on model) has been reached, a booster seat can be implemented.
Infant car seats are rear-facing to offer more protection for the little ones in their early years.
Most infant models are rated at around 5 - 22 lbs.
These will usually be able to get most infants through year one.
Then, different options can be explored in terms of child safety seats for cars.
After the infant stage, the toddler and above stage can be in a forward-facing unit or convertible, for those that only want to buy one product that will last for several years.
Many parents choose the ones that can also be used in a travel system like with strollers and extra stay-in-car bases.
This makes traveling with a baby much more convenient for the whole family.
The last type of seat is a booster seat.
These can have a high back like a portable seat or no back or backless like a booster seat at a restaurant.
Which you choose will again depend on weight and height.
Many of the backed booster seats can easily be converted to backless ones.
The main difference with these is that they use a belt-positioning system for guiding your vehicle's seat belt to the right height and position for kids and not a built in harness system.
Knowing the fundamentals seats for kids for cars can help parent make the right decisions for their kids.
Buying a travel system is an important purchase for a growing family and should not be taken lightly.
With the many choices available, obtaining the wrong type is possible.
So, research and read online reviews carefully before investing in a child car seat.
