- The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant provides funds to the children of military men and women who died while on active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001. The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant is not for students who are eligible for Pell Grants. Students must be under the age of 24, and enrolled as part-time or full-time college students at the time of the parent's death.
- The Twin Towers Orphan Fund was established the day after the devastating events of Sept. 11, 2001. The fund was created as a means of providing financial and mental support to the children who lost a parent in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The fund will provide financial assistance for college and other expenses to the more than 1,200 children who lost a parent in the attacks, until the child reaches the age of 22.
- Sometimes children suffer the loss of a parent, for reasons other than war or terrorist attacks. Forgotten Dependents, Inc., extends assistance to children who have lost a mother or father for any reason whatsoever, for college tuition and related fees and expenses. Unmarried students who have lost a biological parent and are between the ages of 16 and 25 are eligible.
- Students who have lost one or more parents are sometimes given financial assistance for use at a specific college or university. The Walter and Shirley Sperber Scholarship is for use specifically at Michigan State University, and it is for students who have lost one or both parents and will be entering the university directly after graduating from high school. Candidates must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Preference is given to the student with one or no living parents in the home.
