- The Second Chance Homes Program helps low-income single teenage moms with housing and attaining self-sufficiency. The program targets teenage moms between the ages of 14 and 20. The teens live in a group home setting supervised by adults. The program offers supportive services in addition to housing to ensure the young mothers attain stability. Child care, parenting classes and employment training are some of the supportive services provided. Some Second Chance Home programs require the mom to be receiving welfare assistance to qualify for help. The program requires her to complete high school or obtain a GED.
- The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps low-income families pay for rent. Single moms are eligible for a Section 8 voucher. HUD subsidizes the tenant's rent with a rental assistance payment. The tenant is responsible for paying 30 percent towards rent with HUD paying the difference. The mom's income cannot exceed the low-income limit level. Also, she must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen to qualify for help. Contact the public housing authority to get more information on the availability of a Section 8 voucher in her area.
- The Homeownership Voucher Program is for current Section 8 participants. This program helps low-income moms convert their rental assistance payment into a mortgage subsidy. She must have steady income that does not include welfare benefits to be eligible for this program. She is responsible for paying 30 percent of her income towards the monthly mortgage and HUD pays the remainder. The mom must be able to qualify for a home loan to qualify for a Homeownership voucher. Homeownership counseling is also required.
- The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program, or HPRP, helps homeless families or those in danger of becoming homeless, secure housing. Single moms are eligible to apply for help. The program provides money to pay for rent, security deposits, utility fees and other moving expenses. This is not a mortgage subsidy program. To qualify for help, the mom's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area's median income. The money is not paid directly to the mom, but to the third-party provider.
