How to Compare Phentermine & Ephedrine

    Ephedrine

    • Ephedrine is an alkaloid of ephedra sinica, also known as ma huang. When combined with caffeine, ephedrine can promote weight loss. For this reason, ephedrine has been a common ingredient in over-the-counter weight loss products. However, due to its high risk of injury and illness, Medline Plus reports that as of 2004, the Food and Drug Administration has banned products containing ephedra in the United States. Ephedrine continues to be used in prescription medications to treat colds, allergies and breathing conditions due to its ability to dilate the bronchial passages and constrict blood vessels in the nasal passages, improving breathing.

    Phentermine

    • Phentermine is a prescription appetite suppressant indicated for short-term use in the treatment of obesity in combination with proper diet and exercise. Phentermine works by stimulating the central nervous system, which can lead to feelings of excitability, over-stimulation or irritability.

    Side Effects

    • Phentermine and ephedrine have several of the same side effects. These include nervousness, dizziness, headaches, difficulty sleeping, dry mouth and stomach upset.

    Considerations

    • Consult your doctor before taking any weight loss supplement. Make sure he is aware of any medications you may be taking, as well as any known allergies. Read all package information before taking any medication.
