- Review the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) prohibited items webpage that lists all items not allowed in carry-on luggage to avoid costly mistakes at the security line. Sharp objects such as box cutters, scissors and razor-type blades cannot be carried in carry-on luggage. Non-flammable liquids and gels are allowed if they are 3.4 ounces or less. If you're considering carrying snow globes, they are also on the prohibited items list, so be sure to pack them in your checked luggage so you don't have to throw them away.
- According to TSA guidelines you are limited to one bag plus one personal item. The personal item can include a purse, briefcase, camera, food container or laptop (case included). A child-restraint device for a child with a reserved seat, mobility devices for individuals with a disability, outer garments or other wearable articles of clothing, walking canes or umbrellas are all allowed and not restricted under the "one bag plus one personal item" rule. Check with your airline on baggage size restrictions for your carry-on luggage.
- Always pack essentials in your carry-on bag first. These can include identification, snacks, prescriptions and glasses. The TSA recommends that you keep all batteries and similar equipment in your carry-on bags and not in checked luggage. These batteries should be effectively insulated to avoid contact with other batteries. Cameras and laptops should be put in carry-on bags. Check to make sure you have money and/or credit cards before leaving home.
- After you pack your essentials, move on to clothes and boredom-busting items, such as magazines and personal music devices. Be sure to bring your own headphones and adhere to safety guidelines about operating a music device during your flight. If you have scheduled a long overnight flight, a pillow, blanket and comfortable socks or slippers may be appropriate. Clothing should be rolled for optimum use of space and to avoid wrinkles.
- When traveling with babies, always bring diapers, formula, diapers and wipes. Extra clothing is essential for trips. Also bring along small toys and books for the trip to help the child avoid cabin fever. Coloring books with crayons are an excellent distraction. If you have a small, portable DVD player and headphones, it could provide endless entertainment and your seat neighbors will be very appreciative. Small, individually-wrapped snacks, such as granola bars or crackers, can help stave off hunger.
