San Francisco Resident Wants City Ban on Male Circumcision
A San Francisco resident is working to include a measure on next November's ballot that would ban circumcision in the city, CBS News reported Friday (Nov12,20100).
Lloyd Schofield, the author of the measure, calls circumcision "genital mutilation." The measure would make it a misdemeanor to "circumcise, excise, cut or mutilate the … genitals" of a person under the age of 18.
"Tattooing a child is banned as a felony and circumcision is more harmful than a tattoo," said Schofield.
The ban could stir the ire of members of the Jewish faith, who perform religious circumcision ceremonies on eight-day-old male infants.
But Schofield contends religious traditions should change.
"It's a man's body and … his body doesn't belong to his culture, his government, his religion or even his parents. It's his decision," Schofield said, according to CBS.
Schofield must collect over 7,100 signatures for the measure to be included on the ballot.
Circumcision has got a bad side. It apparently appears to be inhuman. To a very baby, it is a very sad event. In view of religious point, it is believed to be good. If a child has a circumcision, it may not suffer from any HIV infection which is very dangerous to the present situation of the society.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, circumcision has been associated with a lower risk for HIV infection in international studies and clinical trials, and serious complications with circumcision are rare.
San Francisco drew worldwide attention when it passed an ordinance last week forbidding restaurants from offering toys with meals that exceed certain levels of calories, sugar and fat.
