1798 - Benjamin Franklin's grandson was arrested for violating the Sedition Act under the charge that he libeled John Adams. He was eventually pardoned by Thomas Jefferson.

1814 - From September 13-14, Baltimore was successfully defended against the British in the War of 1812. It was because of the bombarment of Fort McHenry at this time that Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star Spangled Banner."

1944 - US Troops invaded Germany during World War II
1953 - John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier.
