- Termites build and live in "shelter tubes," which are approximately the diameter of a pencil in size. They travel back and forth within these tubes while devouring wood before returning to the nest.
- If you suspect you have termites in your home or building, look for the insects in and around the home.
- Since termites eat through wood, one of the best ways to determine if you have termite damage is to knock on the wood around the suspected infestation area to see if it sounds hollow, or dig into it with a screwdriver to see if has been hollowed out by termite feeding.
- Sometimes termite damage is so bad that the wood becomes visibly eaten away or destroyed, in which case an infestation will be obvious.
- Termites will bring dirt and leave fecal matter in the wood and in their mud tubes, which should be fairly visible upon inspection.
