IGNORE THE GEKO! DONT GO CHEAP ON YOUR AUTO INSURANCE IN TAMPA BAY!
As a Personal Injury Attorney I know all too well the problems our clients have when they go cheap on their auto insurance. Dont misunderstand me, I am not saying you shouldn't shop around. By all means have your agent shop your policy around so that you can be sure you are getting the most for your money. But dont cut back on your coverage to save a few bucks. More specifically, DO NOT CUT YOUR BODILY INJURY OR UNDERINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE. I have listened to too many clients tell me, my agent said I didnt need to have Bodily Injury or Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage.By law these agents are correct. Florida currently does not require that a motorist carry Bodily Injury (BI) or Uninsured/Underinsured motorist (UM) coverage. But your agent is doing you a disservice in an attempt to save you a few buck and make you happy. If your going to spend the money on insurance, you are far better suited to spend that money wisely on insurance that is going to protect you in the event you need it. Otherwise you are just throwing your money away. Many people, not knowing the effects of not carrying BI or UM insurance go ahead and waive it so that they can reduce their premium.
So naturally you ask, what is so important about BI and UM insurance? Well, Florida does not require a driver to carry BI or UM coverage. The state only requires Personal Injury Protection(PIP) insurance which will cover up to $10,000 of your own medical bills. BI is insurance that will compensate the other party if they are injured in an accident that was your fault. If you elect not to purchase BI coverage and you injure someone in an accident that was your fault, the person will have to sue you personally to recover compensation for their injuries, medical bills and pain and suffering.
The best way you can recover monetary damages when the at fault driver has no BI insurance is for you have UM coverage. If you have UM coverage, your insurance company will further compensate you for your past present and future medical bills as well as pain and suffering, up to the policy limits.
In a recent article published in the Sun Sentinel it was stated that 1 in 4 drivers in Florida do not have insurance. With so many drivers in our state without the necessary insurance, required by law, a driver is putting himself/herself at great risk by not having uninsured and under-insured motorist coverage. The small amount of money saved in your insurance premiums by waiving this coverage is not worth it. Contact us for more information http://palmalawgroup.com/
