There are millions of people every year who start a home based business.
But why are so few having the success that they deserve? Most times it is not from a lack of effort or motivation.
It is most often caused from the fact that there is just so much other stuff going on at home, that they get distracted from doing what needs to be done to be successful.
Here are three traps to avoid when starting a home based business so that you don't sabotage your own success.
1.
Not getting up and getting going.
This is probably the trap that is the cause of most home based businesses to fail.
When you first start working from home, you need to get yourself into a routine.
This means getting up in the morning just like you would if you worked for The Man.
Why is it that we will set the alarm clock to wake up and go make someone else wealthy, but we won't set the alarm clock for ourselves? Sleeping in is not what a successful entrepreneur does when they are starting their first venture.
2.
Getting distracted by the trivial many.
There are many things that come up in the course of a day that can distract us from doing what is important.
I call this the trivial many.
Now this is not a new term, but it always surprises me how many people fall into this trap.
Email is one of the biggest time wasters for anyone in their home office.
Most of them are unimportant and few people separate their work email from their pleasure email in a work from home setting.
You do not need to read some funny email about why God must be a woman in the middle of your work time.
Create yourself a work email address and don't give it out to family and friends.
Save those personal emails for when you are relaxing or in need of a break, after you have been working for a while.
3.
Oh Honey, could you just...
? This was the trap that sabotaged me the most in my first month of working at home.
Your spouse needs to understand that you being at home now is not the same as when you were at home when you had a day job.
Sit down with your spouse and work out a schedule that works for the two of you, with time allotted for you to work, and time set aside as family time.
One of the biggest advantages of a home based business is the flexibility to work on your own schedule.
But you need to have the schedule.
Honey do lists are important, but so are tasks that earn income.
Otherwise your entrepreneurial spirit will get its wings clipped before your business has a chance to soar.
