How to Plant a Backyard Vegetable Garden

Planting a garden can be a soothing and relaxing hobby and the reward of freshly grown vegetables is just a bonus for your efforts. Even if you do not have a ton of space, you can find products at stores like Gardener's Supply Company and Sears to build a garden anywhere, even in your backyard or on your patio. Below are some great ideas on how to start your backyard vegetable garden and tips on how to help it grow.

Choosing Your Space

If you have limited space in your backyard, be sure that you have checked the area for appropriate sunlight and shade. Vegetables tend to need lots of sunshine to grow so you want to make sure that the area is sufficient. Choose an area in your backyard that will not be subjected to trampling by kids playing, is not in the way of backyard sports or barbecues, and that offers easy access for you to maintain the garden after it is planted.

Building the Garden

Once you have chosen the space for your garden, you will need to determine how large or small the garden will be. Sit down and make a list of the items that you want to grow and research the plants to find out how much space they will need, the amount of sunshine they require, and if they will need a trellis or some other structure for their vines to grow on.

You can use wood to build a box that will secure your garden and hold the new soil that you will add. Be sure to till up the ground underneath before adding the new soil and fertilizer to get a good mix for the healthiest plants.

Climbing Plants

For plants that require a trellis or other structure to climb on as they grow, place them towards the back of the garden so that they will not overtake the rest of your plants. Be sure that you train them to climb the trellis by taking the new vines and wrapping them around the structure in place. You might have to do this for several weeks to ensure they do not get tangled in other plants and suffocate them from growing.

Planting

Be sure that the plants are spaced apart from each other in accordance to the recommendations. It is best to plant the same vegetables near one another and not staggered. Make sure the hole is deep enough for the plants to take root.

Maintaining Your Garden

Once you have the garden planted, be sure to water the area sufficiently to help the plants take root. Make sure they are getting enough sunlight and water throughout the day and never water your plants in the strong heat of the day. Watering should be done in the early morning before the sun begins to heat up or in the evening as the sun goes down. Keep weeds out of your garden and avoid insects and other critters with safe pesticides or by creating wire cages around the plants.
