While many gun laws are made at the federal level, specific additions are made at the state level. One of the most important laws concerns the transportation of a firearm in a vehicle. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has the following laws for transporting your concealed weapon. - There is no registration law in Florida requiring a citizen to license her firearm in order to possess or transport it. However, when traveling outside of the state, there are only 28 other states with reciprocity with Florida for concealed weapons in a vehicle.
- Florida citizens have the right to keep an unlicensed firearm in their vehicle, with specific restrictions. In addition to the weapon having to be securely confined within the vehicle, the purpose of the possession and transportation of the firearm must be lawful in reason (i.e., self-defense).
- Although firearms are allowed in the vehicle without a license, if a traffic stop occurs while a firearm is being transported in the vehicle, the law officer must be informed immediately of its existence. The weapon must also be turned over to the officer at his request.
