Different Methods For Treating Sinus Infection In Children

Sinus infection happens when the sinuses become irritated.
This is due to an increased bacterial growth in the sinuses.
The bacterial infection creates more mucus that eventually blocks the nasal passages.
Sinus infections are more often seen in adults, than in children, but it does happen.
The infection is often triggered by an ordinary cold or when children are exposed to allergens.
Children with a sinus infection might complain of headaches, difficulty in breathing or pain around the eyes.
It is very difficult for parents to see their child suffering from any sickness and they would do just about anything to relieve them from it.
Luckily, there are a number of ways of treating sinus infections in children and some are mentioned here - * Antibiotics - Since sinus infections are often bacterial, antibiotics prescribed by a doctor are often the first choice for sinus treatment.
An antibiotic treatment often runs for a week, in order to get rid of the infection.
However, some children are allergic to certain types of antibiotics, so parents should remember that the only time they can give their child antibiotics is if it is prescribed by their doctor.
* Decongestants - This is the most common form of sinus treatment today.
Decongestants are usually sold as nasal drops or sprays and often reduce sinus inflammation.
They are great for giving fast relief from congestion and stuffy nose.
However, decongestants should only be used for a short time, since too much can worsen the infection.
* Drinking more hot beverages - Hot drinks, like tea or soup, help to dissolve the mucus build up that is causing the nasal congestion.
Making your child drink hot tea 3-4 times a day is an easy and effective sinus treatment.
Hot soup that has ingredients, like ginger, horseradish, hot pepper or onions, in it is also good for the sinuses.
* Garlic - A naturally occurring antibiotic, garlic also has anti-bacterial qualities that can cure sinusitis.
Eating 1-2 fresh cloves of garlic is the best way to get its full benefit.
However, this might be hard for children to do.
Garlic pills or mixing it in soups is a good way of getting garlic in a child's system.
* Ginger - Raw ginger is also good at treating sinusitis.
Make some ginger juice by grating ginger and pressing it into a cheese cloth.
Mix it with a glass of water and apply a few drops to your child's nostrils 2 times a day, to clear the air passage and cure the sinus infection.
* Steam therapy - This is an old fashioned but very effective way of treating sinusitis.
Mix a few drops of essential oils into a bowl of hot water and have your child inhale the steam for 10-15 minutes.
This helps with the congestion and makes breathing easier.
While there is a good number of treatment methods open to parents these days, one should consider, first and foremost, their child's comfort and tolerance, before starting any sinus treatment.
Antibiotics and other medicines should also be given, only when prescribed by the family doctor.
