The internet is filled with people who now 'exactly how to cure your acne'; a lot of the information out there has absolutely no basis in reality, and some of it can even make your condition worse.
Let's take a look at a few of them:
Let's take a look at a few of them:
- Most people believe that acne is a result of poor hygiene and uncleanliness.
This is totally untrue as acne is caused by the overproduction of sebum (oil) that blocks the follicle.
Good hygiene does help to not make your existing acne any worse.
Too much scrubbing and washing can actually provoke the oil glands to produce more oil and will result in a worsening of your condition.
Washing your skin twice a day with warm water and a mild soap is more than enough. - Some people think that the sunshine will help clear up their acne.
Sunshine makes your skin darker, thus covering the redness of acne and it also dries your skin out.
It will look as if your acne is much better, but this is only temporary.
Sunshine can actually increase your acne, as your skin is trying to protect itself.
Sunshine in the long term can be very dangerous for your skin because your skin can burn and it causes skin cancer.
Always look after your skin, it's the only one you have. - People assume that acne is caused by bacteria and therefore it must be contagious.
This is untrue, for any disease to be contagious it needs an agent to carry it and that agent needs to be passed on from person to person.
Acne is not caused by bacteria it is only part of the symptoms.
Acne is caused by the overproduction of oil by the oil glands in the follicles or pores of the skin.
Therefore acne is not contagious. - People believe that acne will be outgrown and that it is only a condition that affects teenagers.
Acne shows itself mostly in adolescents, because of the high hormonal activity during puberty.
Adolescents might "outgrow" acne when the hormonal levels stabilise, but it cannot be taken as a definite.
Acne is not restricted to teenagers.
People in their twenties, thirties and forties are often threatened by adult acne.
Even if you did not have acne during puberty, it is not to say that you will not experience it later in life.
Women suffer with acne during periods of puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, when there is a definite change in the levels of hormones. - Many people think that stress causes acne, this is untrue.
Stress does not cause your acne, but it can make your existing condition of acne worse.
Your time is better spent looking for other causes to acne than feeling guilty about stress. - People think by popping or squeezing pimples it will make acne better or make it go away.
This is a very bad habit to entertain; you can actually make your acne worse by spreading the bacteria to neighbouring follicles and infect them as well.
It can also cause bad scarring that is irreversible and you would have to live with it for the rest of your life.
No matter how tempting it is just remember that you only have one skin and cannot replace it.
