Definition: The Ayyubids were a Muslim dynasty founded by Salah al-Din (Saladin) in Egypt in 1171 (when he deposed the last of the Fatimid Caliphs). The dynasty lasted until 1252 when Turanshah, the last Ayyubid Sultan of Egypt, was assassinated by the Mamluk slave-general Aibek, who went on to found the Bahri dynasty.
