A Guide to Herbal Treatment for Insomnia

When was the last time you ...?

Had a good eight hours sleep? Insomnia is a condition, or disorder, that can be described as an inability to acquire an adequate amount of sleep. It can be caused by a variety of influences. Physical, psychological and environmental issues can prevent an adult or child from getting enough sleep. There are a number of treatment options for insomniacs. Due to concerns regarding prescription and over the counter medicines, a lot of people are interested in alternative treatments, such as an herbal treatment for insomnia.

There are several types of insomnia. The different classifications are transient, acute, and chronic. The transient type lasts less than a week. Usually, it is caused by environmental distractions, temporary physical discomfort, or stress. The acute type lasts less than a month. Sometimes, this type is called intermittent (on and off) insomnia, also. Generally, acute insomnia is caused by temporary influences, as well. The chronic type lasts for more than one month. Typically, it is caused by permanent or long lasting medical, psychological, or environmental influences.

Sleep deprivation can produce many negative results. Irritability, fatigue, lower productivity, impaired motor skills, inability to concentrate, and forgetfulness are some common results of a sleep disorder. Serious physical and psychological issues can develop from chronic insomnia, when left untreated. Many desperate, exhausted individuals resort to over the counter medications or prescription drugs for some relief.

When suffering from this condition, the first thing to do is assess the possible causes for the problem. Noise, lights, interruptions, discomfort, and any other environmental factors should be eliminated. Any stress inducing factors should be addressed and resolved. Meditation or another relaxing activity before bed can be helpful. Counseling, or therapy, may prove beneficial, in some cases. In addition, regular exercise, three to five times a week, may provide some relief. An insomniac should avoid caffeine and limit sugar intake. Seriousmedical or psychological conditions should be evaluated by a qualified health professional.

If the problem persists, an herbal treatment for insomnia  might be the perfect answer for those who prefer safe, natural options rather than chemicals. There are quite a few herbal supplements that have shown potential for combating insomnia. Chamomile, usually consumed as tea, has been effectively used as a sleep aid for many years. Valerian, kava kava, passion flower, lavender, avena sativa, celery, and hops are some other herbs that are commonly used to treat sleeplessness.

It is always a good idea to thoroughly research any type of medication before choosing an herbal treatment for insomnia. Also, some natural remedies should not be combined with prescription medicines. Being informed will help avoid possible adverse reactions.
