- 1). Obtain a Form 1040 or a Form 1040A. You cannot currently request a Child Tax Credit with a 1040EZ.
- 2). Examine your income to see if you exceed the limits. To claim the Child Tax Credit, you must make no more than $55,000 if you're married, filing separately. If you're filing together, you may not be able to claim it if you make more than $110,000. All other filers aren't eligible if their income is over $75,000.
- 3). Find out your tax liability. You cannot claim an amount from the Child Tax Credit that exceeds that of your tax liability. If your liability is only $300, for example, you can only claim $300 of the Child Tax Credit.
- 4). Fill out line 51 of your Form 1040 or line 33 of your Form 1040A with the amount of the Child Tax Credit you are claiming.
- 5). Complete your return and send it to the IRS as usual.
