When a cataract surgery done to a patient, the eye's spacified natural lens is extracted and an intraocular lens is planted to replace it.
This lens functions as an alternative to the natural lenses so that the beam or brightness is focused to the back of the eyes.
This lenses has been used since mid-1960's, but the US Food and Drug Administration only gave approval to its use in the year 1981.
What is an Intraocular Lens IOL? This artificial lens used to replace the natural lenses of the eyes is consists of 3 major components - the oval or round optic and its two arc shaped clinging parts called the haptics.
These embeds are usually made from silicone, acrylic and the polymethylmethacrylate materials.
Makers of IOL have different designs depending on the implantation required on the iris or the tinted part of a person's eyes.
Majority of the cataract surgeries in the last two decades focused on insertion of subsequent chambers to replace the natural lenses.
These artificial lens are placed after the iris so that they can fit into the flexible capsule which used to protect the cataract.
When this capsule has been damaged or unstable, surgeons will position the chamber lens in a manner that the haptics suit into slant position of the capsular bag.
Standard intraocular lens are just monofocal.
These types provide a clear vision for some distance range.
With this lens, a person will be able to see clearly even at short, midway or far distances.
While multifocal intraocular lenses gives the person the ability to see well at even farther distances.

The type of these artificial lenses will affect your vision when you are not wearing eyeglasses though some people may still require it for some activities despite having the surgery.

IOL surgery success in every person also depend largely on the size of his/her pupils as well as other health factors involved.
People who wish to eliminate or reduce the need for wearing eyeglasses may opt for additional treatment known as the limbal relaxing incision with the intraocular lens IOL treatment.
This will make your cornea a little bit rounder and symmetrical than before and significantly improve your vision.
