Gonorrhea Symptoms - One Clap Per Minute, Silently

Kent French is an absolutely fantastic person.
He holds the Guinness Book of World Records title as the world's fastest clapper, achieving an astonishing clap rate of 721 claps per minute.
That's 21 claps per second! Simply astounding.
I'd feel like a lame duck applauding for this guy.
I came across Kent's fascinating performance today in Digg, and apparently it wasn't just me who was impressed by his virtuoso performance.
As I'm writing this, 1702 other Diggers unanimously gave their positive feedback on Ken's video.
There is however, a more silent form of "clap," a disease that millions of our population are suffering from, and should be brought to the public's attention.
Well, perhaps not through a YouTube or MetaCafe video, but just the same, everyone should know how pervasive and widespread this disease is.
I'm talking about gonorrhea or the "clap.
" This sexually-transmitted disease (STD) is so common today, that the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates approximately 700,000 people getting infected every year, here in the US.
That's more than one person getting the clap every single minute.
Frightening, to say the least.
Especially if you consider this, in the context of how easily this infection can be transmitted.
Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a pathogen which grows and multiply in the cervix, the uterus, and the fallopian tube in women, and the urethra in both men and women.
It can also infect the throat, mouth, eyes, and anus.
Gonorrhea can be transmitted through contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of an infected person.
A mother with gonorrhea symptoms can potentially infect her baby during childbirth.
Can oral sex transmit the infection? Yes, any form of sexual contact - vaginal, oral, or anal - can transmit the disease.
Can you get gonorrhea by kissing someone infected? Yes.
The disease is also known as the "silent infection" because over half of the women who are infected will not show gonorrhea symptoms or will mistake those as mild bladder infection.
For those women who do exhibit gonorrhea symptoms, the common ones are: frequent and painful urination, vaginal discharge, abdominal pain, and bleeding in between periods.
In men, these are: frequent and painful urination, discharge from the penis, and sometimes, painful and swollen testicles.
The fact that many infected women won't show gonorrhea symptoms is alarming.
Undetected and left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious and permanent complications.
Gonorrhea is a major cause of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)in women, a disease that can lead to chronic pelvic pain and infertility.
It can also cause epididymitis in men, a painful condition that can lead to infertility.
Antibiotics can stop the infection and can treat gonorrhea symptoms but no amount of antibiotics can repair whatever damage the disease may have caused already.
The key to successful treatment is in early detection and immediate medication.
If you experience any of the gonorrhea symptoms described above or have had sexual contact with an infected person AND suspect an infection, see your doctor immediately.
If you're diagnosed to be positive for gonorrhea, you are responsible for informing your sex partner(s) about it, so he or she can also seek medical help.
