The Many Uses of Jojoba Oil

Although commonly referred to as a type of oil, what we actually extract from jojoba beans is a form of liquid wax. Jojoba oil, or jojoba wax ester, is the closest thing we have found in the natural world to the oil produced naturally by the skin. Why is this important? Well, when the skin senses dryness, it reacts by producing more sebum, the skin's natural oil. Sometimes the skin can get it wrong and produce too much sebum which can lead to clogged pores and, as a result, acne. By applying jojoba oil directly to the skin, it is possible to trick the body into thinking it has already produced enough sebum. The jojoba oil not only halts the body's over-active production of sebum, but cleanses and hydrates the skin, helping to clear up acne in no time.

As well as treating skin that's prone to acne break outs, jojoba oil is extremely effective in the treatment of sensitive skin. Although jojoba oil is non-greasy and absorbs easily into the skin, it doesn't evaporate. This means jojoba-based moisturisers and body butters will continue to work on your skin all day, unlike many water-based moisturisers. Thanks to its soothing effect, jojoba oil can be used to treat common skin conditions such as dermatisis and rosacea. Improving the skin's overall health and elasticity, jojoba oil has the ability to protect individual skin cells from moisture loss, healing and reinforcing the outer layer of the skin and minimising the appearance of pores.

A favourite ingredient in natural body butters and moisturisers, jojoba oil can also be used on the face, lips, nails and hair! Not many people know this, but it can even be used as a facial make-up remover. Just apply a few drop of jojoba oil to cotton wool and carefully remove the make up from your face.  Jojoba oil is also a natural alternative to lip balm. Rubbing a few drops onto your lips once a day will protect them from dryness and chapping. The skin around your fingernails can get extremely dry and sore, especially during harsh weather conditions. Again, rubbing a few drops of jojoba oil onto your nail cuticles every day will ensure your hands look soft and smooth. Finally, jojoba can be used to effectively treat dry hair and split ends. Simply rub a few drops of the oil into your fingers and run them through the lengths of your hair, or, alternatively, add a few drops to your regular conditioner.

Aside from all of these wonderful beauty benefits, jojoba oil has been used as a skin care treatment for centuries. It is thought that Native Americans were the first to use jojoba oil to treat damaged skin. Jojoba oil was traditionally used to help the skin to heal cuts, scratches, bruises and blemishes. It's lubricating and hydrating qualities were also utilised to heal the skin following exposure to the sun. Jojoba oil is incredibly stable - it does not lose its natural antioxidants, or become corrupted or rancid even after long periods of storage. This naturally long ‘shelf life' makes jojoba oil one of the most valuable and versatile natural skin care ingredients available.
