So you've just found out that you're pregnant.Congratulations! You will probably be feeling an equal amount of excitement and nerves at the moment! There is no time limit to getting your head around the fact that you are soon going to become a mother, but there is one thing that you must start doing straight away and that is to alter your diet. There are certain foods that you cannot eat when you are pregnant and you should cut these out of your diet straight away. So here is a list of foods to eat when pregnant and foods to stay away from.
We will begin by talking about the pregnancy foods to avoid. You should really concentrate on cutting down on high-calorie foods and fatty foods. These foods are saturated in fat and have zero nutritional value. Take-aways and fast food are particularly bad as they have so many calories in them (over 1000 in a milkshake alone) yet they don't seem to fill you up. Pregnant women only need an extra 300 calories per day and a fast food meal could cost you your whole day's worth of calories in one meal! The fat that is in these foods is not healthy for you or your baby and should be avoided, even if it is only through your pregnancy.
You should also try to avoid soft cheese, raw or undercooked meat, shellfish, raw fish and liver/pate as they all contain harmful bacteria that could affect the development of your baby.
Now onto the foods to eat when pregnant. It is important to remember that you need a balanced diet of nutrients and that a pregnancy diet from all foods groups is recommended to ensure that you are getting the right amount of carbs, proteins, vitamins, etc. Calcium is very important when you are pregnant as your baby will happily source it from your bones in order to support theirs. This can lead to osteoporosis for mums later in life. Try increasing the amount of milk that you drink and that should help. Also iron is very good for pregnant women as it helps keep your red blood cell count up. You can take supplements for this but it's usually better to eat foods full of iron such as green vegetables.
There are many more foods to eat when pregnant and your midwife/doctor will be able to talk you through any questions you may have, don't hesitate to ask.
