Buying a TV is, in a lot of ways, like buying a car. New models come out from year to year. Sometimes the changes are subtle and sometimes they're pretty eye-catching. Also, like buying a car, there are certain times throughout the year when it's better to buy a TV. But is that time now?
In short, the answer is yes. Of course, this answer should always depend on your budget--don't buy what you can't afford. But if you're in the market to buy a TV and you have the finances to do so, now is as good a time as ever.
Basically, there are two ideal times during the year to buy a TV. With the current shape of the economy, the holiday season continues to produce huge sales, especially on electronics. Naturally, you're bound to find the biggest price slashes on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, you're bound to still find sale prices on TVs during the weeks leading up as well as those immediately following Christmas.
If you happen to miss the pre- and post-Christmas sales, don't worry. Experts agree that between February and March is one of the best times to buy a TV. At this point in the year, stores are trying to make room for the newer models. So like a used car salesman trying to make room on the lot, a TV salesman is likely to cut you a deal on the older model.
While technology may be constantly evolving, advancements in TV technology are not as rapid. The difference in TVs from year to year, especially over the last year or so, has been quite subtle. One of the only stand-out advances has been 3D-TV, which most people will agree is not all it's cracked up to be--at least not yet.
Whether or not you're ready to enter the third dimension is up to you. Just know that it comes with a cost. 3D-TVs, naturally, cost more than 2D-TVs. On top of that, there is very limited 3D content available.
TVs have always been a big ticket item. And like any big ticket item, you should put some thought into your decision to buy one. By knowing when and what to buy, you can end up saving yourself a bundle.
