Getting Back to the Basics With Your Garden"s Soil

Soil quality is usually the number one thing that is overlooked in the home garden.
The addiction to the use of chemical fertilizers leave the home gardener with no concern about the soils natural biology and how much it can benefit the health and productivity of the crops they are growing.
Nature can provide everything that you purchase at the local garden center to provide your plants the nutrient they need to thrive, and even more for free.
Not only does the gardener suffer by not having a healthy garden soil, so does nature.
Soil erosion, excessive water usage, pollution, the depletion of natural nutrients and the destruction of the soils natural biology are all major concerns, along with being causes of the use of chemical fertilizers, and can all be prevented, along with being a free benefit of having an organic healthy garden soil structure.
The soils biology can preform many benefits, and these benefits at times just seam to be magic of some kind when you see for yourself natures work in action,if you don't understand how soil works.
Believe it or not, soil is alive, it is a complex community of organisms that are constantly at work improving the soil structure, free labor, work that you don't have to perform yourself physically.
All you need to do is keep the most important part of any soil type alive and healthy is supply it with the organic matter it needs to do it's work.
When looking to put a soil management system in place, one that will improve the soil structure in your home garden and lawncare practices, there are a few steps that need to be followed.
Soil quality factors like, compaction, permeability, porosity, nutrition, organic matter and the soils biology are all important and one can't be improved alone.
They all need to work together to create a soil structure that can provide you with all the benefits that nature can provide you.
When you have a soil structure that is healthy, one that drains well, retains the moisture, along with the nutrients that plant-life needs to thrive, minimize soil compaction and a maintained organic matter content, you have a good management plan in place.
To take things a step further you can incorporate the use of cover crops, they have been proven in being a very effective method of erosion control, in the reduction of soil compaction, they increase the organic content in soil and legumes crops are a benefit in nitrogen fixation.
Starting your own soil management plan for your home gardens and lawncare is easy to do with a little basic planning, and the benefits can be very rewarding for both you and the environment.
