Snoring may not be a problem for you, but that's because you're the one who's getting the sleep.
Millions of people are affected by snoring and it can ruin friendships, marriages and lives.
Snoring is caused by slack muscles inside the throat, which vibrate against the soft palate as you breathe.
As we get older, our throat muscles get weaker, making snoring more likely.
It can also be a sign of sleep apnea - short episodes of interrupted breathing Triggers that can contribute to snoring include being overweight, a blocked nose (from a cold or allergy), sleeping on your back, smoking and heavy drinking.
Some suggestions to stop snoring are: - Lose weight should you need to - Try not to sleep on your back.
Create an obstruction to sleeping on your back using a tennis ball, walnut, cork or other object, that you put in a sock and sew into the back of your pyjamas and this will force you to sleep sideways rather than on your back.
- Put bricks under the legs of the head side of your bed to tilt it up in order to lessen the effect of gravity on the throat muscles.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking within 5 hours of bedtime - Take up singing.
It tones the throat muscles - Use a foam collar to stop the neck kinking whilst you sleep - Hang a damp cloth over the radiator to humidify the room and stop the mucous membranes of the throat and nose getting dry - Sleeping pills and tranquillisers slow down the central nervous system and leave your throat muscles loose and your tongue floppy so don't take them - You can even find rings to wear on your finger to stop snoring, although I don't know if they work - The easiest one to try, so do it first, is to use nostril dilators that you can get from the chemist (they look like plasters) as this helps to prevent mouth breathing by encouraging nasal breathing Obviously if the problem persists, see your doctor and make sure there is no other reason for the snoring.
In any case do something to stop that snoring and keep your partner Happy! Don't let your trumpeting destroy your love life!
