Dollhouse Exterior Design
When you have completed your dollhouse you will want people to admire the outside of your dollhouse just as much as they do the inside. The Paint of the dollhouse along with the look of the shingles is the first thing that you notice with your exterior. To have a quality paint job on your house apply at least three coats of recommended paint. When you are applying the shingles first die them and then assemble them with ruler drawn lines to avoid mistakes. Bird houses, dog houses, gazebos, and more are other ways to spruce up your exterior. You can even have some small flower pots to place in the window seals. Lighting is another addition that will really help the look of the outside features. Lights on exterior are commonly found on the porch, but you can place them pretty much wherever you would like to.
Planning and Preparation with your Miniatures
If you fail to plan you plan to fail. A plan of action is crucial because it will keep you on a track leading to success. A basic floor plan and a budget should be the minimum of your list; these at least will get you started. A floor plan can be as simple as a sketch that was drawn by hand or a print of a room that you would like to copy. There is a plentiful supply of examples of good room designs both online and offline. Simply take note of a great room that you saw at a friends house and make notes on what you liked and what you didnt. If you see something in your notes worthy of changing your plan, then go ahead and do it. Now that you are ready to buy, you will want to break out your budget to make sure that you don't overspend. Unfortunately for hobbyists miniatures can get a little expensive. And if you can't buy the furniture piece yet, save up until you can.
An Addition that can make a Big Difference
Everyone likes to tweak there dollhouses from time to time. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I simply created a floor board to use for the trim around the floor of the dollhouse. You can buy many types of dollhouse trim through stores but what I found to be the cheapest and easiest is purchasing a long thin flat piece of balsa wood. I painted them white, which went with all the walls in my dollhouse, and attached them to the floors throughout the house. I was most impressed to not see any more tiny cracks between the wall and the flooring due to the trim covering it up. The wallpaper walls were also trimmed and I was really happy to see that it prevented fraying due to covering the edges. I realize that this little invention, though not my own, really made my flooring look flush and neat against the wall.
Modern, Victorian, Classical - The Standards of Design
At that moment that you sat back and decided to create your first or next dollhouse you should have had an idea of what it would look like. Each piece of furniture will belong to a certain room, but you must also realize that each room should connect with each other. This will be your style choice or theme for your house. Victorian, Modern, and Traditional, though they are not the only choices, are the major players with dollhouse manufacturers - lets look at each one. If you are more of a romantic you will choose the Victorian theme, because it resembles a tasteful past, fluid curves, and astounding furniture pieces. Modern furniture is more technological, rigid, and fun - giving you options like Television sets, pool tables, and other modern pieces. Traditional furniture doesn't have a lot of pep, but the selection is great - this will fit any dollhouse and can be used at times in matching Modern or Victorian styles.
