Any parent whose child suffers from eczema knows how distressing it can be.
Eczema is the most common skin disease affecting around 15-20% of children. It is an inflammation of the skin that can affect any part of the body. The red patches are itchy and painful. Eczema can also be very distressing as children try to scratch themselves to relieve pain. The scratching can make children bleed. Also eczema can keep children awake and crying.
The usual treatment includes cortisone cream (to relieve the irritation) and special bath and cream products most of them petroleum based. The cream and bath products create an external layer on the skin to lock the moisture in but also preventing it from breathing. Personally I have never found the bath products very useful on my child's eczema. I was never keen on using cortisone cream on a young child as cortisone can affect liver and kidneys. But as the eczema did not recede I did. We tried different dosage but the relief was temporary. We also try eliminating organic juice, cow's milk etc. nothing worked.
During my research I came across articles on the benefits of organic cotton for children with sensitive skins. I was shocked to learn that the "so-called" natural cotton was anything but natural. Conventional cotton is plagued by pesticides and insecticides. In fact a tee shirt made of conventional cotton requires 1/4 pound of harmful chemicals. These can be irritating on the skin and therefore exacerbate dermatitis such as eczema. Also dyes used to colored clothing are very toxic and affect the skin. So I turn my attention to organic cotton which is grown without chemicals. I realized that many organic brands were also using low impact dyes. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is a certification for companies requiring among other things compliance with specified criteria for avoiding or limiting the use of harmful substances in production.
Some companies were even using no dye at all as cotton comes naturally in many different shades such of cream, green, brown and even purple.
While our skin is claimed to absorb up to 60% of the substances it comes in contact with, organic cotton is believed to benefit people with sensitive skins such as children, who are easily prone to eczema and psoriasis.
Organic textiles are generally softer making them the ideal choice for children's clothing.
I started using organic sleep suits, sleeping bag, bedding and bodysuits. The eczema started clearing up after about 4-6 weeks. It was not an overnight result but I could definitely see an improvement. It became more manageable and one summer it suddenly disappeared during a holiday in the South of France bathing in the Mediterranean Sea.
Switching to organic cotton clothing did not only help my child's eczema, it also helped me understand better the importance of organic agriculture to preserve the environment. It helped me develop By Nature by hand selecting only the best kid's eco fashion labels.
We currently stock many different organic labels from both babies and children. They are original, beautifully designed and children love to wear them.
When buying organic clothing for children, you help preserve a sustainable environment for the generations of tomorrow. Lead by example and show children how they can make a difference. Commitment to the environment can start from their very first steps and if you raise them green they will probably stay green.
