As the Chinese Consul or representative in Penang, his opulent home was the order of the day. To date the mansion remains a private property, but no longer belongs to the descendants of the creator, whose name it continues to bear.
The shade of blue is as an outcome of adding natural blue dye extracted from the Indigo Plant, to lime and painting the walls in this domestically concocted heat absorbent paint. The building comprises stained glass, Chinese porcelain work and Gothic louvered windows. It is apparent that Feng Shui principles had been abided by when designing the structure. The mansion has won many an accolade from UNESCO in addition to the numerous hearts it has won over the years.
Presently, a few of the mansions' rooms are let out on a bed and breakfast basis while the others are open for tourists.
