Voting is a medium to express one's preference of a candidate for the electoral office. The Indian Constitution confers its citizens the Right to Vote under Article 19 1(a) which acknowledges our right to know about the candidate to whom we will caste our vote. Article 19 1(a) also provides us the scope to know about the assets and liabilities of the candidate. According to the Constitution the minimum age for a registered voter is 18 years as people are expected to gain minimum level of maturity by this time. This skill is very important as our matured thinking will help us chose a proper Government.
A senior Constitutional Matters Advocate said "As Section 135B of the Representation of the People's Act 1951 provides public holiday on the day of polling, the work force enjoys this day as any other public holiday while shunning their responsibility towards their country. To do away with this notion millions are spent during the elections every year to urge masses to come and exercise their right to vote."
To increase the voting percentage not only the political parties come-up with innovative ideas but also the Election Commission of India conducts various awareness programmes. They rope in various eminent faces like Aamir Khan, Soha Ali Khan to do voting awareness campaigns who will appeal to masses about the importance of casting their vote. The Commission have also resorted to street plays, releasing musical cds, and advertisements to increase the voting awareness as a major population of India is uneducated. While distributing pamphlets and brochures will not attract their mind. The institution is also thinking of introducing e-voting as an option to encourage the disable and old citizens to vote from their house itself. Some major reforms during the election of 2014 are noticed. After 55 years Tibetan folks were given the right to vote in India. Finally Election Commission in 2014 has asked all the states to enrol Tibetan refugees & their children in the electoral lists.
Supreme Court in a historic verdict allowed citizens to cast a negative vote which means you can reject all candidates contesting the polls. This decision will encourage people who are not satisfied with the contestants will turn up to vote and their percentage will give a strong message to the existing political parties that the country men are not happy with their work.
Kisley Pandey, the Constitutional Matter Advocate states that" negative voting or I do not want to vote for any of the above candidates will give the voters a potential choice, which will take us close to real democracy€.
