The capital of the state of West Bengal, Kolkata is the most important cog in the machinery ofcity in Eastern India. It is the third most populated metropolis in the whole of Indiathe country. Kolkata has been unfortunate to always get the third priority due to biggies like Mumbai and Delhi getting maximum attention. The city has really progressed in the near past. That is clear from the fact that its economic output was ranked the third highest among all the South Asian cities. Kolkata is one of those few cities which have managed to tread the thin line between modernity and the nostalgic past. It has invariably maintained the feel of the past, with the ethnic structures and the old-world culture still strongly intact.
Kolkata has a rich history to look up to. The city has been ruled upon by the Nawabs, the Mughals and the British, under whose rule it was also the capital of India till New Delhi became the capital in 1911. A lot of independence struggle has taken place here as it was actively involved in the political scenario. It was also a political hotspot during the days of the freedom struggle in the country. Kolkata has also been a major contributor in arts and culture. The active scene of art, dance, music and theatre here contributeds majorly to the richness of Indian culture as a whole. It is therefore also called the 'Cultural Capital of India', and rightly so. This present scenario is due to the Bengal Renaissance in the 19-20th century. Kolkata has since, produced a lot of Nobel laureates, universally acclaimed film directors and intellectuals.
The Bengali film industry is also located here. Various cultural landmarks like the Victoria Memorial which documents the history of the city, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Indian Museum, and the National Library of India make up for the intellectual and artistic culture. Many major personalities like Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, and Buddhadeb Dasgupta etc. are products of this land.
The architecture of Kolkata is also a pleasant mixture of Indo-Islamic and Indo-Saracenic styles. The buildings have a very ethnic feel to them. At first look, they seem tattered and fragile, but they are way too precious and filled with countless stories. All are well maintained from the colonial period. The Marble Palace is one such piece of architecture, which is a European mansion style building. Places like St. Paul's cathedral and the Birla Mandir also attract a lot of deserved attention. The multicultural diversity is mirrored in the mosques present her, namely the Nakhoda mosque, and the famous Tipu Sultan's mosque being the primary ones. The calm cemetery of South Park Street is also famous for its colonial feel. And Kolkata is absolutely nothing without the iconic Howrah Bridge, which is a universal icon.
As beautiful as the city is, the beauty of hotels in Kolkata is in at par with it. Many luxury hotels in the city maintain a great standard via their services, hospitality and amenities provided. Many hotels have maintained the British charm within, which reflects in their architecture. There are in-house pubs in some hotels, while there are aroma spas, excellent room service along with free internet connectivity in almost all the hotels. There is no turning back from the beauty of these hotels in Kolkata, as they are an integral part of the culture of the city.
