The Magnificent Amber Fort In Jaipur

The Amber Fort is a living testimonial of Rajputana rulers of the Kachhwaha clan who ruled this place for centuries. The fort complex is situated about 11 kilometres from Jaipur, the capital city of the Rajasthan state in India. The captivating charm of this fort is white marble and red sandstone magnificent structure amidst the picturesque and rugged hills. The structure is also known as the Amer Fort to locals. Prior to shifting of the capital to Jaipur the Amber Fort was the fortress of the then ruling tribe of the Kachhawa clan in Amber.

Amber was the capital of the Kachwahas until 1727 when the ruler of Amber Sawai Jai Singh II founded a capital about nine kilometres south of Amber. This new city was named after him as Jainagara (Jaipur). The capital of Kachwahas was supplanted by the modern city of Jaipur.

The Fort was built by Raja Maan Singh I in the 16th century. He was the Commander in Chief of military under the reign of Akbar the Great, India's third Mughal Emperor. The Fort was a citadel of Amber in the past and today it attracts tourists from everywhere with its unrivalled interior architecture. Amber Fort used to be a portion of a palace complex along with another famous fort known as Jaigarh. The construction of the fort commenced in the late 16th century and was completed during the reign of Raja Jai Singh I. The fort was named after Goddess Amba and houses several spectacular buildings such as the Diwan-i-Khas and the elaborately painted Ganesh Pool built by Mirza Raja Jai Singh I (Man Singh I's grandson). The famous Sheesh Mahal, adorned with numerous mirror tiles on its walls and ceiling, is a part of this Fort. The fort complex is divided into four main sections with entry gate and courtyards. Suraj Pol (Sun Gate) is the main entry gate to which leads to Jaleb Chowk, the main courtyard of the fort.

The fort reflects lifestyle of brave Rajputs in each portion and exhibits celebrations, adventures, power, strength, culture and privacy. Located of the hills of Aravalli, the fort was used by the Rajputs equally for security reason as well as the housing purposes. The fort looks rugged from outside, but it is totally enthralling and enchanting from inside. The entire fort complex is divided into huge halls, majestic palaces, beautiful temples and gorgeous green gardens. These attractive gardens and spectacular palaces are constructed from marble and precious stones and are decorated with complex stonemason works and paintings, which symbolize royal grandeur and comfort. This is a hilltop fort which can be reached either by an elephant ride or on any vehicle. The elephant ride is the most royal way to visit several attractions of this fort.

As visitors make their way to the Amber Fort, another little palace along the way is bound to catch the eye. Better known as the Hall of Public Audience, it is a pavilion with forty pillars. The craftsmanship displayed here is amazing and it is said that the general public met with the Maharajahs in this place.

Some of the rooms within the palace of the fort complex are beautifully embellished with small mirrors that are immersed in a sea of vivid patterns. The palace complex also nestles temples and courtyards where you will encounter the giant silver lions. Amber Fort is like a comprehensive gallery of art for it even presents refined bass-relief designs within one of its temples.

This fort also showcases the fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture, design and decoration. This is a classic and romantic fort palace having a magnificent aura which never fails to impress tourists who come here from across the globe.
