Go Goa! Sun-kissed beaches, neon- lit night clubs, water sports, bottles of fenny and ancient cathedrals, mingle together to let you experience the liveliest vacation of life. Goa beckons tourists to splurge in the spectacular Goa Carnival that is celebrated all across the state and brings with it myriad colors of merrymaking. It is a festivity of dance, music, song, food and unlimited fun which reserves its seat for the month of February every year. Trip to this spotless land during the 3-day long festival gives you an exciting opportunity to witness a wonderful extravaganza.
The festival was introduced by the Portuguese during the 18th century. It represents the commencement of 40 days of fasting of Lent and people pay homage to legendary King Momo for three days. Goa Carnival is the most spectacular fest of India which is celebrated mostly by Christians. Today its popularity has spread to every corner of the world and thousands of visitors visit Goa during the fest to soak in fun and celebration. Goa represents a different picture altogether. It becomes a portrait of intermingling communities, colorful nights, dancing feet, cultural events and twinkling lights with the aroma of delicious food and sound of rock music at the background.
Like Diwali and Dusshera, people start preparing themselves for the fest in advance. Young boys and girls design their costumes exclusively for the occasion and start rehearsing for short plays composed of music, dance and songs. And at the dawn of the fest, King Momo flags of the event of Goa Carnival India. Every corner of the city glares with multi-color lights, ribbons and shimmering papers. People come down to roads with processions filled with dances and musical bands. Grand balls in the evenings and performance of live bands leave tourists fascinated. A series of cultural shows and entertaining competitions add spice to the event. Participants wear multi- color costumes and masks for fun and dancers get dressed in colorful attires like Brazilian Samba dancers. By the end of the competition judges select the winners and King Momo gives away the prizes. Fireworks are presented and people smash color on each other. Red and Black Dance organised by Clube Panjim happens to be the concluding ceremony of the Carnival.
Goa carnival is incomplete without culinary delights. As the aroma of lip smacking delicacies is in the air, locals and tourists get a grand opportunity to taste exotic Goan cuisine from food stalls. Also a variety of tasty preparations along with wine is distributed to participants and visitors. The flavor of Shakuti, a curry made of chicken, lamb or turtle along with other food preparations like Vindaloo and Saurpatel top the list of preferred food items. And then the potent Feni of Goa, a local drink made from cashew and palm variants is a must sip.
