What Do Ataxia and Lethargy Mean?

    Symptoms

    • Ataxia is a symptom where one becomes less coordinated. This can be seen in the inability to speak, control eye movements and walk. Lethargy is a condition in which a person is excessively tired or fatigued. This can also be described as a state of drowsiness and apathy. These both can be chronic complaints for people, indicating an underlying concern.

    Conditions

    • There are many conditions that can cause either one or the other of the symptoms, be it ataxia or lethargy. There are some conditions that can cause both of these symptoms. These symptoms are often not diagnostic in themselves, so tests are needed to determine the cause of the symptom. However, some conditions that present themselves with these symptoms include head trauma, stroke, cerebral palsy and tumors.

    Tests

    • A whole battery of tests can be done to help to determine the cause of the symptoms. These tests can include blood tests, urine tests and imagining scans. An additional screening can include a genetic or history test to see what conditions are in one's history. These tests can several weeks for results and your doctor can discuss the results with you to help to determine a diagnosis.

    Treatments

    • The treatment of ataxia and lethargy depends on the cause for the symptom. To assist with the treatment of ataxia, there are no medical methods available. However, canes and physical therapy can help a person regain some level of coordination. Lethargy can often be treated with stimulants, such as caffeine and B12 vitamins. Finding and treating the underlying condition is the only way to stop the symptoms.

    Discussions

    • Discussing your symptoms with your physician is the best way to determine the cause of the symptoms. These symptoms can be concerning, and if these symptoms do appear, talking to your doctor as soon as possible. While ataxia is more concerning than lethargy for most, they are both serious symptoms that can indicate a serious medical condition.
