How to Use Plaid Window Treatments Successfully

Plaid curtains and custom window treatments are a home decorating trend increasing in popularity.
While many people like the idea of using plaids in their home decor, it is a bold step that may leave them wondering how to decorate with plaid curtains.
The key is to pair strong patterns with less busy prints and colors throughout the room.
Color Coordination Use non-dominant colors present in the plaid pattern for wall paint or wallpaper and floor color.
For example, consider using whites, yellows, beige and any pastels or medium shades for walls and floors.
Lighter colors will make the room look larger.
Use bolder colors for furniture and decorative accents in the room.
Patterns Plaids that feature four or five colors are easy to match with bedding and linens, wall coverings, casual furniture, tile and carpeting.
The plaid's cousin, the check, is an equally popular pattern.
They feature well in the kitchen as other rooms where casual plaids are appropriate.
Gingham has made a stylish comeback and is one way to brighten up a room.
Casual or Formal Plaids are typically used in a casual atmosphere.
Consider the TV room, den, child's bedroom, kitchen, bathroom or basement.
They can be used with custom curtains and a valance on top for an informal look.
Another option is to use tiebacks to keep the windows open to let light into the room during the day.
Use solid colors for the tiebacks with coordinate with colors found in the plaid pattern.
For custom curtains, the tiebacks and valance can be used from the same fabric.
Choose coordinating colors from the pattern that match flooring, walls or furniture.
The kitchen is another less formal room where plaids are appropriate.
Be sure to coordinate cabinet and countertop colors, flooring and walls with one or two colors found in the pattern.
Smaller decorative accents can play on bolder colors.
While not the first choice for a formal room, plaid custom draperies in muted tones can be used without taking over the room.
Room Decor Depending on the type of furniture and wall coverings in the room, plaid curtains can be a welcome addition or a horrible mistake.
Try to avoid using busy patterns throughout the room, especially if the patterns are all bright and bold.
For example, these curtains may work in the TV room as long as the upholstery on the couch and chairs is not also plaid.
Instead, choose solid colors or subtle textured patterns on furniture.
Choose colors that are in the window treatments to pull the room together.
Decorate seating with custom throw pillows that match the curtains.
Use plaid pillow accessories in the bedroom, or perhaps a plaid custom shower curtain in the bathroom to coordinate with the custom window treatments.
The use of plaids as a fashionable trend allows homeowners to use their sense of style to accent the room.
Use these patterns on windows to brighten up the room.
As people enjoy the distinctive look of plaid in home decor, there are just few rules to remember.
Never pair bold plaids with large bold prints, and try to coordinate other colors in the room with those present in the pattern.
