- 1). Locate the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for the car you would like to check the history for. The VIN number is located under the windshield on the driver's side. It is located inside of the vehicle, but can be seen through the glass.
- 2). Visit an online website that will allow you to retrieve vehicle history reports. A couple of good options are Carfax.com and AutoCheck.com
- 3). Enter the car's VIN inside of the appropriate search box. Click on the "Search."
- 4). View the car's history for free. If the car has been involved in an accident, it will appear on the report. To view the details of the accident, you will have to purchase the report. You can purchase the report by entering valid credit card information.
- 5). Print the report for future reference. Carfax and AutoCheck promise to purchase a car back from you if you purchased a lemon due to inaccurate history information being reported for your car.
