Not far from Girona in Northern Spain is the small medieval town of Besalu. It sits comfortably at the confluence of two rivers, the Fluvia and the Capadella. It is an ideal place to spend a few days, exploring the surroundings and the many tourist landmarks, and you can even take a side trip to Girona.
Many Interesting Sites
Besalu has had a vibrant history since its discovery in the ninth century. It was even the capital of a country that no longer exists and which stretched all the way to France. You will therefore find that Besalu has many interesting sites to visit; old monuments, historic churches and of course you would not want to miss the festivals.
Old Churches
In the main square you can find the Church of Sant Pere or Saint Peter, built in 1003 and originally part of a monastery. It is a historic site and is a good example of medieval architecture.
The Milova
Not far from the Fluvia River is a Jewish bath dating from the days before the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. Known as the Milova, it is a tourist attraction and has been restored to its original condition. In the local Tourist Office you can pick up the key if you want to make a personal tour.
Ratafia Fair
The Fiera de Ratafia or Ratafia Fair is held in December in honor of the local brew, the Ratafia, a sweet liquor made from local grapes and mixed with a variety of ingredients that add to its flavor and punch. There are many stories and legends that speak about its production and the ways that this local beverage earns its good taste. Instead of spending a few years in oaken casks in temperature controlled conditions, the Ratafia is left outside in the open air so that the sun and moon can work its special magic.
Many Restaurants
There are many restaurants you can go to. A local organization of restauranteurs ensures that its members maintain standards for local dishes using local products. You can thus be sure that the meals you are served are authentic Besalu cuisine.
Side Trips
You can easily make a day trip to nearby Girona to visit the many museums, the famous cathedral or just roam about this beautiful city. Girona also has some wonderful stores where you can buy the latest styles and good footwear. The town of Figueres is also close to Besalu, about 20 kilometers and has a museum dedicated to Salvador Dali, its most famous son.
