How to Achieve a Traditional Look in the Bathroom

As modern styles come and go, and the definition of 'contemporary style' is, in practical terms, ever changing, traditional style remains a constant - and there are plenty of people who love Victorian style bathroom features.
If you're one of them, and you're wondering how to go about creating a period-style bathroom in your modern home, read on.
First, think about how far you want to go.
If your home essentially modern in design and build, without period features, you could install a bathroom packed with Victorian style sanitaryware and bathroom furniture - but you might find that the transition between your bathroom and the rest of your interior is a little too striking.
It may be better to retain a modern, minimal interior and adding a few period features: an elegant roll top bath with traditional taps is always a popular choice.
Put it in the middle of the room if you have the space, then add elegant, floor standing bathroom furniture that's not overtly antique in style.
You may like to consider adding a chandelier for some additional glamour.
In a period property where traditional features occur throughout the house, it's simpler: you can go for anything from a single nod to Victorian style, to a lovingly recreated period bathroom.
Whatever you do will look good - so long as you do it well.
Choose from key pieces such as a roll top or slipper bath with free standing, cross head taps and a 'telephone handle' style shower mixer, a period-inspired washstand or antique wooden vanity unit with vessel basin, a high level toilet (if you have sufficient ceiling height) or a traditionally styled close coupled toilet, an ornate mirror, old style towel rail and radiator, traditional tiles for the walls, and wooden or realistic wood effect flooring.
Decant your shampoos and body lotions into potion bottles to display on open shelving, buy traditional bathroom accessories such as 'train rack' style towel holders, and think about traditional style lighting.
For authenticity, you can buy an old cast iron bath from a reclamation yard and have it re-enamelled on the inside and re-painted on the outside.
Alternatively, a top of the range brand new copper bath will have a traditional look and the glow of burnished copper in some low mood lighting or flickering candlelight can be really warm and welcoming.
And baths made from acrylic or stone resin compounds may be modern, but they faithfully copy a traditional style and are a less expensive option than cast iron.
An ornate, spindle-legged washstand will give you a period bathroom look - but can be a little impractical in terms of storage.
An old wooden vanity unit, meanwhile, will provide capacious below basin storage while looking the part.
You can buy from new, or search antique shops, second hand sales, and reclamation yards to find an old cabinet or console table that can be plumbed with a vessel basin and traditional taps for your unique take on Victorian style.
