Tenerife is a tiny island off the coast of North Africa, sitting within a group of smaller islands in the Atlantic Ocean known as the Canary Islands. Due to its location, Tenerife receives warm weather all year round and is a popular destination for tourists, so popular in fact that it receives around five million visitors a year, mainly from Europe. It's no surprise that tourism remains as Tenerife's main source of income and has subsequently adapted it's attractions to accommodate the large numbers of visitors, many of whom come from the United Kingdom.
If considering a trip to Tenerife to sample the culture and history of the island, then there is one carnival which is a must. The carnival of Santa Cruz is arguably the most important festival of the year and attracts many tourists to the event, dubbing it as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. It is celebrated all over the island and showcases bands, street musicians, masquerades and minstrels. This isn't just a one day event though. This street carnival lasts 10 days with large numbers of people and tourists gathering in the centre of Santa Cruz.
What about the culinary delights the island has to offer? As an island in the Atlantic Ocean, Tenerife enjoys a wide variety of fish such as sea bream, groupers, Atlantic mackerel, sardines and red porgys. Given the amount of fish available, the inhabitants of Tenerife have a huge list of ways to cook them. You may not think it, but Tenerife exports a huge amount of cheese per year which has continued on since the colonial period as it has proved to be a commercial success for the island. The main cheese of export is goat's cheese and cottage cheeses. So if you're looking for a good quality goats or cottage cheese, make sure it has come from Tenerife.
Tenerife is also home to two of the biggest theme parks in Europe, Siam Park and Loro Parque. Taking advantage of the year round warm weather, Siam Park is a thrilling water park themed around the Thai culture. Along with the sun and water, tourists from all over Europe travel to Tenerife, especially to take part in the fun at this park, sometime staying for weeks.
Loro Parque is located in the Puerto de la Cruz and is dedicated to wildlife attractions and adventure. With mainly aquatic wildlife such as killer whales, dolphins, sea lions and penguins, Loro Parque is a favourite amongst animal lovers.
As Tenerife is a volcanic island, you cannot travel from one end of the island to the other simply by going through the middle. This makes for good driving experience along some spectacular scenery and vistas of the coastline and it is usually recommended to hire a car to visit the different towns and cities of the island.
