Video: How to Estimate Cost for Upright Bookshelf

Video Transcript

In this video clip, we will be estimating materials. As I take a look at my design, I notice that I am going to need 4 sides being 6 feet high and 10 inches deep. I am also going to need two top pieces that are going to be about 22 inches by 10 inches deep and I am going to need two bottom pieces that are going to be the same. I am going to need several shelves for each unit and those shelves will be 22 inches wide by about 10 inches deep and I am also going to need trim for all these boards and that kick plate down there. What I like to do at this point is draw up all of my components and kind of lay them out so I can tell how much material I need to buy. If you take a look here, this piece is quarter inch plywood and that will cover my back pieces. These two pieces will be 3/4 inch plywood and I have my sides, I have my top and bottom on each one and then I actually have enough to make eight shelves. I might not make that many but we will see once we get that far. In addition to these materials, we will probably need a good sized board to put all that trim around our plywood and for that kick plate down at the bottom. As we go through building our bookshelves, I am actually going to be building two sets of bookshelves. The first set is going to be made out of oak so our materials we will need is one good size oak board, 1/4 inch sheet of oak plywood and two sheets of 3/4 inch plywood. My second set of bookshelves is going to be painted so I am going to use a cabinetry grade birch so I am going to get two sheets of 3/4 inch plywood, one sheet of 1/4 inch plywood and I am going to attempt to use my remaining scrap wood for all the trim around my second set of bookshelves.
